The bottom line
Setting up a custom-domain email address is genuinely simple — most domain registrars walk you through it in fifteen minutes. The problem is that the easy setup almost always omits the parts that determine whether your emails actually arrive in customers' inboxes versus disappearing into spam folders. SPF records that should reference all your sending sources (your mail provider, plus marketing tools like Mailchimp, plus transactional services like SendGrid, plus your CRM if it sends emails) are usually configured to reference just one. DKIM signing isn't enabled, so receiving mail servers can't verify messages came from you. DMARC policy is either missing entirely or set to a value that doesn't actually protect against spoofing. Reverse DNS doesn't resolve. The result: legitimate marketing emails land in spam, transactional emails about password resets get delayed, and you don't notice until customers complain.
