The plan price is only half of what Shopify costs you. On top of the monthly subscription you pay a card processing fee on every order, and if you take payment through a third-party gateway rather than Shopify Payments you pay an extra Shopify surcharge as well. This free calculator adds all of that up so you can see your true monthly cost and your real effective rate as a percentage of revenue.
Enter your monthly revenue and average order value, then toggle between the Basic, Grow and Advanced plans, monthly or annual billing, and Shopify Payments or a third-party gateway. The tool shows a full breakdown for the plan you pick, compares all three plans side by side and highlights the cheapest, and tells you the exact revenue at which each upgrade pays for itself. It is built for UK Shopify store owners, founders and finance people who want a fast, defensible number before choosing a plan or moving payment provider.
A third-party gateway adds Shopify's surcharge here, plus that gateway's own processing fees on top.
Where it goes
At an average order value of £60, on monthly billing with Shopify Payments:
Grow vs Basic
Grow pays for itself above £13,333/month
Advanced vs Grow
Advanced pays for itself above £139,500/month
Total monthly cost and effective rate for each plan. The cheapest at your revenue is highlighted.
For each plan: plan cost = the monthly price, or the lower annual-billing price when annual billing is selected. Orders = revenue ÷ average order value. Card fees = orders × the flat fee per transaction + revenue × the online card rate. Surcharge = revenue × the plan's third-party rate, applied only when a third-party gateway is selected. Total monthly = plan cost + card fees + surcharge, and the effective rate = total ÷ revenue × 100.
The crossover points use each plan's variable rate v = online rate + flat fee ÷ average order value + (third-party surcharge when selected). Grow beats Basic above (Grow plan − Basic plan) ÷ (Basic v − Grow v), and Advanced beats Grow above (Advanced plan − Grow plan) ÷ (Grow v − Advanced v).
Important: with a third-party gateway you also pay that gateway's own processing fees on top of the Shopify surcharge shown here. The base card-fee figure uses the Shopify Payments rate as a like-for-like baseline so the plans compare fairly. Plan prices and card rates are taken from Shopify UK pricing.

It combines your Shopify plan cost (billed monthly or annually) with the online card processing fees on Shopify Payments, which are a percentage of revenue plus a flat fee per order. If you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments, it also adds the extra Shopify surcharge charged per transaction. The result is a true monthly cost and an effective rate as a percentage of your revenue.
It depends on your monthly revenue. The higher plans cost more upfront but charge a lower card rate, so they only pay off above a certain revenue. The comparison table works out the total for all three plans at your numbers and highlights the cheapest, and the crossover callout tells you the exact revenue at which Grow beats Basic and Advanced beats Grow.
No. The surcharge shown here is only the extra amount Shopify charges when you do not use Shopify Payments. Your third-party gateway (for example PayPal or Stripe) charges its own processing fees on top of that. The base card-fee figure uses the Shopify Payments rate as a like-for-like baseline so you can compare plans fairly.
The flat fee per transaction is a fixed amount per order, so it is a larger share of a small order than a large one. A low average order value means more orders for the same revenue, which means more flat fees and a higher effective rate. Raising your average order value lowers the blended cost of the flat fee.
The plan prices and card rates come from Shopify UK pricing and were last verified on the date shown in the methodology panel. Shopify changes pricing from time to time and negotiated or promotional rates exist, so always confirm the current figures on Shopify's own pricing page before making a decision.
