How to write great meta titles and descriptions

Writing a strong meta title

  • → Keep it between 50–60 characters to avoid truncation.
  • → Place your primary keyword near the start of the title.
  • → Use a separator (| or –) to include your brand name at the end.
  • → Make it descriptive and specific — avoid generic titles like "Home" or "Services".
  • → Every page should have a unique title that matches the page content.

Writing an effective meta description

  • → Aim for 150–160 characters — use the space without exceeding the pixel limit.
  • → Include a clear call-to-action: "Find out more", "Get a free quote", "Learn how".
  • → Don't just repeat the title — add context, a benefit, or a USP.
  • → Write for the user, not the search engine — it should make them want to click.
  • → Include your target keyword naturally — Google bolds matching words in snippets.

Pixel-accurate limits

Google measures display width in pixels, not just characters. Our checker estimates pixel width so you know exactly when your tags will be truncated.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta title be?
Between 50 and 60 characters. Google displays titles up to approximately 600px wide — roughly 60 average-width characters. Longer titles are cut off with an ellipsis in search results.
How long should a meta description be?
Between 150 and 160 characters. Google truncates descriptions at around 920px on desktop, which equates to roughly 155–160 characters in a standard font.
Does a meta description affect SEO rankings?
Not directly. Meta descriptions aren't a Google ranking factor, but a well-written description improves click-through rate (CTR). Higher CTR signals relevance, which can indirectly improve rankings over time.
What is pixel width and why does it matter?
Google renders titles and descriptions in a proportional font, so different characters have different widths. A title with lots of wide characters (W, M, uppercase) may truncate at fewer than 60 characters. Our tool estimates pixel width so you can catch this before it happens.
Will Google always use my meta description?
No. Google may rewrite your description with content from your page if it thinks that better matches the search query. This is most common when descriptions are too short, too long, or not closely related to the actual page content.
