Managed Cloud Hosting on AWS, Cloudflare, and DigitalOcean

Cloud hosting done right is an architecture decision — we design, deploy, and operate environments matched to what your application actually needs, on the platform best suited to your workload.

JW Digital architects and operates production cloud infrastructure on AWS, Cloudflare, and DigitalOcean. Every environment is provisioned via infrastructure-as-code, configured with least-privilege security baselines, tuned for the workload it runs, and monitored end to end. We handle the architecture decisions, the provisioning, the deployment pipelines, the scaling policies, the security controls, and the ongoing operations — so you get the benefits of cloud-grade infrastructure without hiring a dedicated DevOps team.

Platform-Right Architecture

AWS for complex multi-service architectures and regulated workloads, Cloudflare for edge-first global delivery, DigitalOcean for SaaS and growing applications. We pick the platform that fits the workload — and tell you honestly when one would be a poor choice.

Infrastructure-as-Code Provisioning

Terraform or CloudFormation definitions for every environment — version-controlled, reviewable, reproducible. Disaster recovery becomes a matter of re-running code, not reconstructing fragile manual setups.

Auto-Scaling, Edge Delivery & Cost Control

Auto-scaling groups, load balancers, multi-region failover, and Cloudflare or CloudFront edge delivery — tuned to your real traffic patterns. Budget alerts and anomaly detection catch runaway spend before it shows up on an invoice.

Security, IAM & Compliance Baseline

Least-privilege IAM, security group audits, secrets management, encrypted storage at rest and in transit, and access logging — the foundational controls needed for ISO 27001 or SOC 2 readiness applied during provisioning.

The bottom line

Cloud hosting has been heavily marketed as a universal upgrade, which has led plenty of businesses to overspend on cloud infrastructure when a managed VPS would have served them better at half the cost and a fraction of the operational complexity. We are honest about this. Most small business websites do not need cloud — they need a properly configured managed hosting environment, and the cloud upsell is more about provider revenue than client outcome. Cloud hosting becomes the right choice when one or more of these conditions is genuinely true: traffic is significantly variable or unpredictable (so static resources sit underutilised most of the time but cannot cope with peaks); the application requires multi-region performance for a global audience; high availability requirements exceed what a single VPS can deliver contractually; the architecture involves many separate services (microservices, queue workers, separate database tiers) that benefit from managed cloud equivalents; or strict compliance requirements demand the audit logging and IAM controls cloud platforms provide. For those workloads, the right cloud architecture delivers significant advantages: elastic scaling means you pay for what you use rather than overprovisioning for peak; multi-region deployment cuts global latency meaningfully; managed services like RDS, ElastiCache, and S3 reduce the operational burden of running databases and storage yourself; and infrastructure-as-code makes the entire environment reproducible. For clients building large applications, we coordinate cloud hosting with our app development and database and API development teams so the architecture and the application are designed together — not bolted to each other afterwards.

Our Process

Our Cloud Hosting Deployment Process

Architecture-first, infrastructure-as-code, and operationally sustainable from day one

  1. 1

    Workload Discovery & Architecture Design

We start by understanding what your application actually does — traffic profile, latency requirements, data residency, regulatory constraints, peak-vs-average resource usage, and growth assumptions. From there, we design the right architecture: which services, which regions, which platform, and where the boundaries between managed services and self-hosted components should sit. The output is a written architecture document you can review before any infrastructure is provisioned.

  2. 2

    Platform Selection & Cost Modelling

We map the architecture to the right platform — AWS, Cloudflare, DigitalOcean, or a multi-platform combination — based on workload fit, service availability, and operational suitability. We then produce a cost model showing expected monthly spend at current and projected scale, so you can make the decision with full visibility rather than discover the bill three months in.

  3. 3

    Infrastructure-as-Code Provisioning

Every environment is provisioned via Terraform or CloudFormation rather than clicked together in a console. This means the infrastructure is version-controlled, reviewable, reproducible across staging and production, and disaster recovery becomes a question of re-running code rather than reconstructing a fragile manual setup. Security baselines, IAM policies, and encryption defaults are applied during provisioning.

  4. 4

    Deployment Pipelines & Auto-Scaling Configuration

We configure CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab, or AWS CodePipeline) for repeatable deployments to staging and production. Auto-scaling groups, load balancing, and scheduled scaling are tuned to your actual traffic patterns. Where applicable, we set up scheduled scaling for predictable peaks (UK business hours, marketing campaigns, end-of-month batch jobs) rather than relying purely on reactive scaling that lags real demand.

  5. 5

    Monitoring, Logging & Cost Controls

CloudWatch, Datadog, or Cloudflare Analytics are configured for end-to-end observability — application performance, infrastructure metrics, error rates, security events, and cost. Budget alerts and anomaly detection catch runaway spend before it shows up on an invoice. Log aggregation makes incident investigation tractable rather than archaeological.

  6. 6

Ongoing Operations & Quarterly Architecture Review

Daily monitoring, patch management, backup verification, scaling policy tuning, and incident response run continuously. We hold quarterly architecture reviews to look at cost optimisation, service updates from your cloud provider, and whether the architecture still fits how your application has evolved. Cloud infrastructure that goes a year without review tends to drift into expensive sub-optimal configurations.

Our Pricing

Cloud Hosting Pricing & Plans

Cloud hosting pricing is shaped primarily by the platform spend itself — AWS, Cloudflare, or DigitalOcean charge directly for the resources you consume. Our management fee is a fixed monthly cost on top of that, scaled to the complexity of your environment rather than a percentage of cloud spend (so we are not incentivised to inflate your bill). Starter cloud deployments suit Next.js applications and Jamstack sites that benefit from edge delivery. Mid-tier deployments handle SaaS platforms with managed databases, queue workers, and auto-scaling. Enterprise deployments cover multi-region high-availability architectures, microservices, and regulated workloads. Clients building applications often pair cloud hosting with our app development and database and API development teams for a fully coordinated build.

Illustration representing frequently asked questions

It depends on your workload. AWS is the right choice for complex multi-service architectures, regulated workloads, and clients who need the deepest service breadth. Cloudflare is unmatched for edge-first applications and global static delivery. DigitalOcean is the pragmatic choice for SaaS platforms and growing applications that want cloud benefits without AWS-level operational overhead. Most production setups we run combine an origin on AWS or DigitalOcean with Cloudflare at the edge. The right answer comes from your application's actual requirements, not provider loyalty.

VPS hosting gives you guaranteed dedicated resources on a single server at predictable monthly cost. Cloud hosting gives you elastic resources that scale automatically with traffic, multi-region deployment, managed services like databases and queues, and significantly more sophisticated high-availability options — but with more architectural complexity and variable cost. For most small business websites, our VPS hosting solutions are the better fit. Cloud becomes the right choice when elasticity, multi-region performance, or strict availability requirements genuinely matter.

Yes. We migrate applications between cloud providers (AWS to DigitalOcean, DigitalOcean to AWS, multi-cloud consolidations) and from non-cloud hosting (managed hosting, VPS, on-premises) to cloud. Every migration begins with a written plan covering staging environment setup, data transfer strategy, DNS cut-over, and rollback procedure. The old environment stays operational until the new environment is verified.

Cloud platforms themselves offer strong baseline security — the question is whether your environment is configured to use it properly. Default cloud configurations often leave significant security gaps (overly permissive IAM policies, public S3 buckets, unrestricted security groups). We provision every environment with least-privilege IAM, encrypted storage, audited security groups, secrets management, and access logging. For regulated workloads we provide the controls needed for ISO 27001 and SOC 2 readiness.

Yes. Auto-scaling groups, load balancers, and multi-AZ or multi-region failover are configured during deployment based on your actual traffic patterns and availability requirements. We tune scaling policies to your real workload rather than leaving defaults that either over-provision or react too slowly to spikes. For genuine high-availability requirements (multi-region active-active, RTO measured in minutes), we design and document the architecture explicitly.

No. Once an environment is handed over, we manage it end to end — patching, scaling, monitoring, incident response, security maintenance, and quarterly architecture review. You retain ownership of the cloud account and can audit everything we do via IAM logs. The boundary is clear: you own the account; we operate the infrastructure.

Cost control is structural, not reactive. We size resources to actual workload rather than worst-case, use reserved instances or savings plans for predictable baseline load, configure auto-scaling to release resources at off-peak, and set budget alerts that catch runaway spend early. Quarterly architecture reviews include cost optimisation — most cloud environments accumulate waste over a year and benefit from a deliberate prune.

Yes. Next.js applications run well on Cloudflare (Workers/Pages) for edge-first delivery, AWS (ECS, App Runner) for backend-heavy architectures, or DigitalOcean App Platform for simpler deployments. Headless CMS architectures pair particularly well with cloud setups where the frontend is delivered from the edge and the backend runs on managed services. SaaS platforms typically use managed databases, queue workers, and auto-scaling — all configured during onboarding.

Faster is not automatic. Cloud hosting can be significantly faster — particularly when paired with edge delivery via Cloudflare for global audiences, or when managed databases relieve a previously overloaded application server. But poorly architected cloud setups can be slower than a well-tuned VPS. We measure baseline performance before migration and verify the improvement after, so the gain is documented rather than assumed.

Our management fee is monthly with no long-term lock-in. The cloud platform charges (AWS, Cloudflare, DigitalOcean) are pay-as-you-go — though reserved instances or savings plans can lock in discounts for clients who want them. Cost models and contracts are documented in plain English during onboarding, including bandwidth, storage, and egress policies, so there are no surprises three months in.
