DDoS-for-hire and automated vulnerability scanning mean attacks are cheap, constant and untargeted — you do not need to be a notable target to be hit, and the cost of being unprotected is full downtime during an attack or a breach through an unfiltered exploit. Recovery, lost revenue and reputational damage vastly exceed the cost of mitigation configured in advance. Layered edge protection turns most attacks into a non-event: volumetric floods are absorbed upstream, application exploits are filtered before they reach code, and automated abuse is throttled. It also typically improves normal performance by offloading and filtering junk traffic at the edge.
