Database Optimisation & Maintenance for Data-Heavy Applications

Ongoing performance tuning, monitoring, and proactive maintenance for SQL and NoSQL databases — keeping your data layer fast as your application grows.

Databases that performed brilliantly at launch frequently degrade silently as data volume grows, queries evolve, and indexes lose their effectiveness. JW Digital provides ongoing database optimisation and maintenance for PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, and managed cloud databases — auditing query plans, tuning indexes against real workloads, applying schema improvements safely with zero downtime, and monitoring health metrics that predict trouble before it becomes outage. Available as a one-off audit and remediation, or as an ongoing retainer for businesses running data-intensive applications.

Query & Index Optimisation

EXPLAIN plan analysis on your slowest queries, index strategy refinement against real workloads, query rewriting where it matters, and quantified before/after performance documentation so the improvement is measurable.

Performance Monitoring & Slow Query Detection

Continuous monitoring of query latency, connection pool exhaustion, lock contention, and replication lag — with alerts when metrics drift and quarterly health reports for clients on maintenance retainers.

Backup Verification & Disaster Recovery

Backups that are tested rather than assumed, point-in-time recovery procedures documented and rehearsed, and disaster recovery runbooks that turn worst-case incidents into predictable operations.

Schema Evolution & Zero-Downtime Migrations

Safe schema changes applied via online migrations — adding columns and indexes without locking tables, refactoring data with backfill jobs, and renaming or restructuring without breaking running applications.

Why you need database optimisation maintenance

The bottom line

Almost every slow-database problem we are called in to fix has the same shape. The application was fast at launch. The database was fast at launch. As data volume grew over months and years, queries that used to take 5ms slowly crept to 50ms, then 200ms, then a customer noticed. Indexes that were effective when the table had 10,000 rows are scanning hundreds of thousands and producing latency the application layer cannot mask. Statistics are out of date, so the query planner is choosing suboptimal execution paths. Connection pools are exhausted at peak. Vacuum and maintenance jobs are misconfigured or never running. None of these issues are caused by bad code at launch — they are the natural consequence of running a database without ongoing attention as the workload changes. JW Digital provides the attention. We audit query plans against real workloads, refine index strategy as access patterns evolve, apply schema improvements safely with zero downtime, and monitor the health metrics that predict trouble before it becomes outage — connection pool utilisation, replication lag, lock contention, slow query trends, vacuum lag on PostgreSQL, IOPS saturation on cloud-hosted instances. Quarterly health reports show what we did, what improved, and what's coming next. The service is available as a one-off audit and remediation project when you need to fix specific problems and document the baseline, or as an ongoing maintenance retainer for businesses running data-intensive applications. Pairs naturally with our database design and architecture service for new database design and refactoring, our cloud database solutions for managed cloud hosting, and our managed UK hosting for fully-supported infrastructure. The boring multi-year reality of running a production database becomes someone else's job — and we are good at that job.

What's Included

What's Included in Database Optimisation & Maintenance

Audit, remediation, monitoring, and ongoing attention — the full lifecycle of running a database in production

1

Performance Audit with Baseline Documentation

Written baseline covering query performance, index health, table bloat, replication lag, connection pool utilisation, and IOPS — so future improvements are measured against documented metrics rather than vague impressions.

2

Query & Index Optimisation

EXPLAIN-driven tuning on the queries that actually matter, index strategy refinement as access patterns evolve, and quantified before/after performance documentation — improvements are measurable, not assumed.

3

Schema Refactoring & Online Migrations

Safe schema evolution using pg_repack, pt-online-schema-change, or equivalent online-migration tooling — adding columns, changing types, splitting tables, and refactoring data without locking tables or breaking running applications.

4

Verified Backups & Disaster Recovery Drills

Automated backups with point-in-time recovery, tested restoration procedures, and documented disaster recovery runbooks — backups verified rather than assumed, and recovery rehearsed before incidents happen.

5

Continuous Monitoring & Alerting

Live health dashboards and alerting on query latency, connection pool exhaustion, lock contention, replication lag, vacuum lag, and IOPS — with engineers triaging the alerts rather than them disappearing into a queue.

6

Quarterly Reviews & Health Reports

Quarterly written reports covering what improved, what regressed, what changes we made, and what we recommend next — plus index and capacity planning reviews against current growth trends.

Our Process

Our Database Optimisation & Maintenance Process

Evidence-based diagnosis, measured remediation, and ongoing attention — not a checklist run once and forgotten

  1. 1

    Database Audit & Baseline Documentation

We start by measuring. Current query performance via slow-query logs and pg_stat_statements (or equivalent), index health, table bloat, replication lag, connection pool utilisation, IOPS and disk usage, vacuum and statistics freshness. The output is a written baseline that future improvements are measured against.

  2. 2

Slow Query Analysis & EXPLAIN-Driven Tuning

We identify the queries that actually matter — not by intuition but by the slow-query log, application APM data, and EXPLAIN plans on the queries customers are waiting for. Index strategy is refined, queries are rewritten where it pays off, and improvements are documented with before/after metrics so the value is measurable.

  3. 3

    Schema Refactoring & Online Migrations

Where the schema itself is limiting performance — missing constraints, denormalisation that has gone too far, JSON columns used as table substitutes, ENUMs that should be tables — we plan online migrations using pg_repack, pt-online-schema-change, or equivalent tooling, applying schema improvements safely without downtime.

  4. 4

    Backup, Recovery & Disaster Drills

Backups verified rather than assumed — we test restoration into a staging environment so the backups are known to work. Point-in-time recovery procedures documented and rehearsed. Disaster recovery runbooks written so a worst-case incident becomes a predictable operation rather than an improvised one.

  5. 5

    Monitoring, Alerting & Health Dashboards

Continuous monitoring of query latency, connection pool exhaustion, lock contention, replication lag, vacuum lag, and IOPS — with alerts routed to engineers when metrics drift. Live health dashboards available to your team so the state of the database is observable rather than mysterious.

  6. 6

    Quarterly Reviews & Ongoing Iteration

Quarterly health reports covering what improved, what regressed, what we changed, and what we recommend next. Index strategy is reviewed against current access patterns, capacity planning is updated against growth trends, and security patches are applied as part of the routine — not as a panic response when a CVE is disclosed.

Our Pricing

Database Optimisation & Maintenance Pricing

Pricing scales with the size and complexity of the database, the number of environments (production, staging, replicas), the platform (self-hosted, cloud-managed, multi-region), and whether the engagement is a one-off audit or an ongoing maintenance retainer. A one-off audit and remediation project for a single database typically falls between £700 and £3,500. Ongoing maintenance retainers start from £500/month for routine attention on a single production database and scale up for multi-database, multi-region, or high-write-volume workloads. We produce a written scope before any engagement begins. Pairs naturally with our database design, cloud database solutions, and managed UK hosting services for fully-owned production operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most Asked Questions

FAQs

Common questions about API development, database design, integrations, headless CMS, cloud databases, and ongoing data infrastructure with JW Digital.

Illustration representing frequently asked questions

Three layers. Query optimisation — analysing slow queries with EXPLAIN, refining index strategy, and rewriting queries where it pays off. Schema optimisation — fixing modelling decisions that compound at scale, like missing constraints, denormalisation that has gone too far, or table structures that no longer match access patterns. Operational optimisation — tuning connection pools, vacuum and statistics maintenance, replication configuration, and IOPS allocation. Most projects involve some of each.

Yes — that's the standard expectation. Index additions can usually be done concurrently in PostgreSQL or with online DDL in MySQL. Schema changes use online-migration tooling (pg_repack, pt-online-schema-change, or equivalent) so tables are not locked during refactoring. Where a change cannot be done safely online — rare, but it happens — we plan a maintenance window with you in advance rather than discovering it during the change.

PostgreSQL is our deepest specialism — it powers most of the production systems we work on. MySQL where the existing stack requires it. MongoDB for document-oriented workloads. Redis for caching and session stores. Managed cloud databases on RDS, Aurora, Cloud SQL, Azure SQL, Cosmos DB, Firestore, and Supabase. We work on self-hosted and cloud-managed deployments equally.

Against a documented baseline. The audit phase captures current state — slow query log entries, P95/P99 latency per endpoint, IOPS, connection pool utilisation, replication lag. After optimisation we measure the same metrics and produce a before/after report showing exactly what changed. Improvements are quantified, not asserted.

Verified. Backup configuration failing silently is one of the most common database issues we find — typically nobody discovers the backups have not run for months until a recovery is genuinely needed. We test restoration of recent backups into a staging environment as part of the audit, and configure ongoing backup verification so failures are alerted rather than assumed away.

Yes. Alerts are designed with severity tiers and explicit routing. Critical alerts (production write failures, replication lag spike, connection pool exhaustion) go to humans with active triage. Informational alerts go to dashboards rather than inboxes. We tune the alerting during the first month of operation to reduce false positives — alert fatigue is the most common reason monitoring stops working.

Yes — our cloud database solutions service covers managed cloud database hosting on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud, and our managed UK hosting service covers VPS and dedicated database hosting where self-hosted deployment makes sense. Maintenance retainers integrate cleanly with whichever hosting setup you have, including coordination with your existing cloud provider.

On ongoing maintenance retainers, response times are agreed in the SLA — typically within 1 hour for production-down incidents and 4 hours for severe-degradation incidents. For one-off audit clients, we accept emergency engagements on a best-effort basis. The fastest way to get fast response when you need it is to be on retainer before the incident.

Yes. We work on databases hosted with any provider — AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, Heroku, DigitalOcean, Supabase, Render, or self-hosted setups. The audit and optimisation work is independent of where the database lives. Where the hosting setup itself is limiting performance, we will tell you honestly and recommend the change — but we will not pressure you to migrate unless it genuinely matters.
