Website Performance Optimisation & CDN Setup

Diagnose what's actually slow, fix it at the right layer, and deliver content from the edge — for measurable Core Web Vitals improvements and faster real-user experience.

Site speed is shaped by the build, the hosting stack, and the delivery layer working together — fixing one without the others rarely produces the result you want. JW Digital diagnoses your real performance bottlenecks using Lighthouse, WebPageTest, and field data from Search Console, then applies fixes at the correct layer: caching and runtime tuning at the server, image and asset optimisation at the build, and CDN delivery at the edge. The outcome is a documented before/after improvement in Core Web Vitals and real-user metrics — not a vague speed-up promise.

Optimise My SiteView Our Work

Core Web Vitals Optimisation

Targeted fixes for Largest Contentful Paint, Cumulative Layout Shift, and Interaction to Next Paint — addressing the specific issues your field data identifies rather than applying generic optimisation checklists.

CDN & Edge Delivery

Cloudflare or AWS CloudFront CDN configured for global asset delivery with HTTP/3, Brotli compression, and intelligent cache rules — reducing latency for international visitors and offloading traffic from your origin server.

Server-Side Caching & Database Tuning

Server-side page caching, opcache, object caching with Redis or Memcached, and database query optimisation. Particularly impactful for WordPress, WooCommerce, and database-heavy applications that are bottlenecked at the origin.

Image, Asset & Code Optimisation

Modern image formats (WebP, AVIF), responsive image delivery, lazy loading, JavaScript bundle splitting, render-blocking resource elimination, and font loading strategy — applied where they actually move the metric, not as bulk theatre.

The bottom line

The performance audits we run on inherited sites almost always reveal the same pattern: someone, at some point, did a generic 'speed optimisation' pass that compressed images, minified CSS, and enabled basic caching — and the site is still slow. The reason is that the actual bottleneck wasn't on the front-end. It was a 4-second Time to First Byte caused by an unindexed database query running on every page load. Or it was a render-blocking JavaScript bundle from an analytics tool nobody is reading. Or it was a Cloudflare configuration that was actually caching dynamic content and serving stale checkout pages. Generic optimisation passes apply known techniques to all sites equally — and on sites where the bottleneck isn't in the targeted layer, they make no measurable difference. JW Digital diagnoses the real bottleneck before fixing anything. Lighthouse and WebPageTest give the synthetic view. Search Console field data shows what real users actually experience (often very different from lab tests). Server logs reveal where time is being spent. Database slow-query logs surface the queries that drag every page. APM tools like New Relic or Datadog identify which code paths consume disproportionate resources. Once the actual bottleneck is identified, we fix at the right layer — server-side caching and database tuning where the origin is slow, CDN configuration where global delivery is the issue, JavaScript bundle splitting where third-party scripts are the problem, image and font optimisation where the browser is bottlenecked. The outcome is documented before/after improvement in Core Web Vitals and real-user metrics — not a vague speed-up promise or a meaningless 90+ Lighthouse score that doesn't reflect actual user experience. Pairs naturally with our managed website hosting (where the server-side performance work lives), bespoke website design (where new builds are tuned from the start), and SEO agency services (where Core Web Vitals contribute to search rankings).

What's Included

What's Included in Performance Optimisation & CDN Setup

Diagnostic-led performance engineering — not generic checklists applied indiscriminately

1

Lab & Field Performance Audit

Lighthouse and WebPageTest synthetic testing combined with Search Console field data and RUM for real-user experience — plus APM and server log analysis to identify origin-side bottlenecks before any fixes are applied.

2

Server-Side Caching & Database Tuning

Page caching, opcache, object caching with Redis or Memcached, database query optimisation, index tuning, connection pooling, and PHP-FPM/Node process tuning — the layers where most poor TTFB problems actually live.

3

Image, Font & Asset Optimisation

WebP and AVIF conversion with responsive delivery, lazy loading for below-the-fold content, font preloading for critical fonts, font-display strategies, and asset minification — applied where they move the metrics, not as bulk theatre.

4

JavaScript Bundle Optimisation & Third-Party Audit

Bundle splitting, tree-shaking, render-blocking elimination, and audit of third-party scripts — measuring the performance cost of each tracker and tool against its actual delivered value, then removing or deferring what doesn't earn its weight.

5

CDN Configuration & Edge Delivery

Cloudflare, CloudFront, or Bunny CDN configured with HTTP/3, Brotli compression, and intelligent cache rules that respect dynamic content — explicitly avoiding the generic 'cache everything' configurations that cause stale-content bugs.

6

Verification Report & Optional Ongoing Monitoring

Documented before/after improvement against the audit baseline using the same tools; optional ongoing Core Web Vitals monitoring so future regressions from content or code changes are caught quickly rather than discovered weeks later.

Our Process

Our Website Performance Optimisation Process

Diagnose first, fix at the right layer, measure the result — not generic checklist theatre

  1. 1

    Lab & Field Performance Audit

Lighthouse and WebPageTest for synthetic performance under controlled conditions; Search Console field data and Real User Monitoring (RUM) for actual user experience. We compare the two — when they diverge, that's where the most informative bottlenecks live. APM and server log analysis identifies origin-side delays.

  2. 2

    Bottleneck Identification & Prioritisation

Slow queries surfaced from database logs, render-blocking resources identified, third-party script weight measured against benefit delivered, image and font payload audited, server response time profiled. We rank issues by user-experience impact rather than fixing whatever's easiest — generic optimisation theatre isn't what gets paid for.

  3. 3

    Server-Side Optimisation & Database Tuning

Where origin response time is the bottleneck (most common cause of poor Largest Contentful Paint): server-side page caching, opcache and object caching with Redis or Memcached, database query optimisation and index tuning, connection pooling, and PHP-FPM or Node process tuning. Particularly impactful for WordPress, WooCommerce, and database-heavy applications.

  4. 4

    Front-End Asset & JavaScript Optimisation

Modern image formats (WebP, AVIF) with responsive delivery, lazy loading for below-the-fold content, JavaScript bundle splitting and tree-shaking, render-blocking resource elimination, font loading strategy (preload critical fonts, font-display: swap), and third-party script audit — removing or deferring trackers and tools that don't justify their performance cost.

  5. 5

    CDN Configuration & Edge Delivery

Cloudflare, AWS CloudFront, or Bunny CDN configured for global asset delivery with HTTP/3, Brotli compression, and intelligent cache rules that differentiate between cacheable assets and dynamic content. Edge caching tuned to your application — generic 'cache everything' setups often serve stale dynamic content, which we explicitly avoid.

  6. 6

    Verification, Documentation & Ongoing Monitoring

Before/after measurement against the baseline using the same tools used in audit. Improvements documented in a written report — not just 'we made it faster'. Optional ongoing monitoring keeps Core Web Vitals visible over time so regressions from future content or code changes are caught quickly via our website backup and monitoring service.

Our Pricing

Performance Optimisation & CDN Setup Pricing

Pricing scales with the audit depth, the layers requiring work, and whether the engagement is a one-off optimisation or includes ongoing monitoring. Basic optimisation with CDN setup and front-end asset tuning starts from £80. Full-stack optimisation engagements — audit, server-side caching, database tuning, JavaScript optimisation, CDN configuration, and verification — typically fall between £400–£2,500 depending on the platform complexity. Heavily-loaded WordPress, WooCommerce, or custom application optimisation can scale higher. We produce a written audit report and recommendations before the optimisation work begins, so you understand what's being changed and why. Pairs naturally with our managed website hosting, bespoke website design, SEO agency, and website backup and monitoring services.

Because the optimisation likely fixed the wrong layer. Generic speed-optimisation packages typically compress images, minify CSS, and enable basic caching — useful steps, but they make no difference if your actual bottleneck is a 4-second Time to First Byte caused by an unindexed database query, or a third-party tracker blocking the main thread for 2 seconds, or a Cloudflare configuration caching dynamic content incorrectly. Real performance work starts with diagnosing the actual bottleneck, not applying known techniques blindly.

Lab data (Lighthouse, WebPageTest) measures performance under controlled synthetic conditions — fixed network speed, fixed device, fixed location. Field data (Search Console Core Web Vitals, RUM tools) measures what real users actually experience across the real range of devices, networks, and conditions. They often diverge significantly. A 95 Lighthouse score is meaningless if your real users are on slow 4G with 5-year-old phones experiencing 6-second LCP. We measure both, but we optimise for the field.

A CDN caches your static assets (images, CSS, JavaScript, fonts) on edge servers around the world, so visitors load those assets from the geographically nearest location rather than your origin server. This significantly helps global audiences and reduces load on your origin. It does NOT help if your visitors are all in the UK and your server is also in the UK — the latency saving is minimal. It does NOT help dynamic content that can't be cached. We configure CDN where it genuinely matters and tell you honestly when it wouldn't move the needle.

Yes. WordPress sites have specific performance characteristics that respond well to targeted optimisation — server-side page caching (W3 Total Cache, WP Rocket, or platform-native), object caching with Redis, PHP-FPM tuning, opcache configuration, and database query optimisation typically deliver the largest improvements. Front-end work on top adds further gains. Heavy theme bloat is sometimes the bottleneck and needs honest acknowledgment — we'll tell you if the theme is fundamentally limiting performance.

No, if done correctly. CDN misconfiguration can cause stale-content bugs (cached checkout pages, cached login state) — we explicitly avoid this through proper cache-rule design. JavaScript bundle changes can introduce regressions — we test thoroughly across the critical user journeys before declaring the work complete. Image format changes (WebP/AVIF) include fallbacks for older browsers. We provide a verification report showing before/after metrics and confirming no functional regressions.

Modestly but measurably. Core Web Vitals are one of Google's ranking signals — not the largest, but a contributing factor. The bigger SEO benefit is indirect: faster sites have lower bounce rates and higher engagement, both of which Google reads as quality signals. For sites where Core Web Vitals are genuinely poor (failing thresholds in Search Console), fixing them produces real ranking benefit. For sites already in the 'good' band, further optimisation produces user-experience and conversion benefits more than ranking benefits.

Yes. Modern frameworks have their own performance characteristics — Next.js benefits from proper Image component usage, ISR configuration, route caching, and bundle analysis; React apps need careful state management and memoisation; static sites benefit from edge caching and prefetching strategies. We optimise across WordPress, WooCommerce, Shopify, Next.js, Astro, and custom React/Vue applications — the principles are the same; the techniques differ by platform.

Both options. One-off optimisation engagements suit sites that need a step-change improvement and have stable content and code afterwards. Ongoing performance monitoring suits sites with frequently-changing content (eCommerce, content publishers, active SaaS) where new images, articles, or features can introduce regressions. Ongoing monitoring is available via our website backup and monitoring service with Core Web Vitals tracking and alerting on regressions.

Yes, often significantly. Server-side caching reduces database and PHP execution load, sometimes allowing sites to handle 10x more traffic on the same infrastructure. CDN reduces bandwidth and request load on the origin. Heavy hosting bills are often a symptom of poor caching rather than a need for more resources — optimisation can defer or eliminate hosting upgrades and reduce cloud bills measurably. We're explicit about realistic cost impact during scoping.
